The purpose of the skin object [USER] is to show either the name of the person who has logged in, or to show some words to encourage the user to login.

The default message, to be displayed if the user hasn't logged in, is "Register".  This may be changed in the XML file associated with the skin. Don't forget to give the XML file the same name as the skin html file.

<OBJECTS>
  <OBJECT id="Object1" VIEWASTEXT>
    <Token> [USER]</Token>
    <Settings>
      <Setting>
        <Name> Text</Name>
        <Value> Please Register</Value>
      </Setting>
    </Settings>
  </OBJECT>
</OBJECTS>

Once the new skin has been added to your portal go to the Admin>Site Settings page. We will now configure the site to make use of the [USER] object. If we accept the default User Registration? settings of the portal, of none, then no encouragement to register is displayed if we are not logged in. When we are logged in our name is shown. We need to set a level of registration to ensure that the default value is shown. Select the last one, verified. Now if you are not logged in, the default wording willbe shown.

Because the changes which will be made have different results dependadant upon whether you are logged into your portal or not, you will probably find it easier to have two browser windwos open. One in which you are logged in, to make the changes and observe the results for this state. The other to observe the situtation from an anonymnous user view point.
