 DotNetNuke Articles

For most DotNetNuke web sites this is probably the most used module. The Text/HTML module provides us with a WYSIWYG editor for entering and amending content. Content may be either plain text, or can include images. This text is held within just such a module.

The DotNetNuke Rich Text Editor
The DotNetNuke Rich Text Editor

The module permits us to do a few clever things like creating lists:

  • aligning text
  • indenting blocks of code
  • creating links to pages on the website or externally
  • changing the colour and font style of the text

If you know HTML then you can also enter this directly into the module.

The Editor uses an extension of Internet Explorer and as such to reap the full benefits of using a DotNetNuke web site this browser should be used. When you first login to a DotNetNuke web site the editor is presented in its simplest format, select the Rich Text Editor option at the top and the page will be reloaded with the editor and its options in place. The next time that you wish to edit a Text/HTML module on the web site it will remember your selection. This is the case unless you use another instance of the browser.

Content may be pasted into the editor from other applications, including word processing packages. Icons are provided for this, but I must admit to preferring the use of C and V for copy and paste respectively.

Once you have added all that additional content to your web page. Take a look over it, ensure that key words which other Internet users are likely to search upon have been used. Now edit the page (tab) options and ensure that you have added a Title, Description and keywords, these should be taken from the content of the web page, or be relevant.. Don't make these too long, think about what you see when you search on the Internet and what encourages you to visit a web page.

The version of the editor which ships with the version 2.1.2 of DotNetNuke has a problem when you first use the editor and make a save additional line feeds are added to your document.  It is my recommendation that you open the editor, select the Rich Text Editor, if you prefer, then click on the cancel option. There after when you open the editor the extra line feeds will not be a problem.

The new version of DotNetNuke, 3.0.9 Beta at the time of writing, does not have this problem. The editor also defaults to using the WYSIWYG Rich Text Editor format. some of the older functional options have also been added back in.

Update NAT June 2005

Pasting text from MS Word is one of the benefits of using the Rich Text Editor in DNN, unfortunately this process also copies across the Office specific tags, which although the Clean MS word HTML option available in DNN3 removes, it is not an entirely successful process as additional line spaces are inserted into the document.  A workaround that we use and suggest to clients (available to MS Word 2000 users onward*) is to use the Web Page, Filtered save as option within MS Word:

  1. Edit your word document as normal and save.
  2. Select the Save As option, and for the file type select Web Page, Filtered.
  3. Open this saved file with Notepad.
  4. Copy and paste the content from Notepad into the DNN Rich Text Editor - ensuring that you have selected the HTML tab first.
  5. Click back to the design view to see the result.

* MS Word 2000 may require a download
